Dogs can become diabetic after the pancreatic tissue is destroyed by inflammation or infection, or may have underlying diseases like Cushing's disease that leads to diabetes.
Diabetes in cats is very different than in dogs. It is best treated with a long acting insulin known as Lantus and a low-carb (preferably canned) diet. Why canned? You cannot make cake without flour. You cannot make dry food without some type of carb / starch. Cats are true carnivores and do better on an "Atkins" diet-- high protein and LOW CARBS.
